"SoHo Urban Wax is a female, Male-Waxing Spa in the Town of Islip since 2008. And now SoHo Urban Wax is ready to downsize! As of March 1, 2023, I am joining Gold's Gym in Islip. I just want to slow down and have flexibility at this stage of my life."

Everything you want to know before your first — or next — visit.

Does waxing hurt?+
We are not going to lie — if this is your first time, it is going to be uncomfortable. But the worst part for most is the anticipation. Once it is over and you know what the first time is like, it will be over before you know it.
What is a Brazilian wax?+
Think no hair anywhere in the pubic region. You can, however, request to go bare but leave a landing strip or triangle shape above the vaginal region (sometimes called a "playboy").
Will a Brazilian wax hurt?+
Everyone has a different experience. You should expect some discomfort, but women and men who experience it say it is so worth it. Hello smooth skin! Goodbye razor burn, ingrown hairs, and post-shave itching.
I'm embarrassed about getting my privates waxed.+
Stripping down in front of a stranger may initially feel awkward. Please keep in mind that you are with a professional and we are not judging you. You are not the only naked person we have seen. The whole experience is rather clinical, and we make it as comfortable as possible.
What is a Bikini wax?+
If you are wearing a bikini and there are hairs exposed outside the bikini line, those are the only hairs being removed.
What is a Thong Bikini wax?+
A Thong Bikini removes all hair from the pubic region except the labia and butt crack. You are left with an inch-wide landing strip.
What is the ideal hair length before waxing?+
The longer the hair, the better! The ideal length is 1/4 of an inch to allow the wax to grip effectively. On average it takes about two weeks to grow out after shaving, though this varies by individual.
What kind of wax does SoHo Urban Wax use?+
We believe in quality over quantity. We use two of the finest wax brands available, chosen based on skin type, hair type, and service area. For sensitive areas (eyebrows, lips, bikini, underarms) we use hard wax — low heat, less sticky, with anti-irritants. For less sensitive areas we use soft wax removed with a strip.
Is there anything I can do to prepare?+
Remember, the anticipation is usually the hardest part! We recommend taking ibuprofen at least 20 minutes before your appointment (as long as it does not conflict with medical advice). Avoid caffeine and alcohol beforehand as these stimulants can increase sensitivity.
Does hair grow back thicker and darker after waxing?+
Not possible — this is an old wives' tale. Over time with regular waxing, regrowth actually weakens and comes in finer and thinner. If hair appears darker or thicker, that is a function of hormones, not waxing.
What causes ingrown hairs?+
Ingrown hairs may be caused by four factors:
  1. Genetics — your wax specialist will recommend the best follow-up care, typically an exfoliation treatment.
  2. Wax technique — improper strip removal direction can contribute. We take great care to avoid this.
  3. Tight clothing — can cause irritation. Use an exfoliating product on prone areas 24–48 hours after your appointment.
  4. Hair weakening — as hair thins over time with regular waxing, a temporary tendency for ingrowns may occur. Continue exfoliating as recommended.
Why are men's service prices higher than women's?+
Honestly, it's a lot more work! We consider the amount of hair to be removed and the difficulty of removal when setting prices. We recommend male clients maintain services every 4 to 6 weeks to keep things simpler and more affordable.
Can I shave between waxing appointments?+
No! Shaving between appointments makes the hair more resistant to future waxing. Please let your hair grow out naturally so we can achieve the best results at your next visit.
What if I get white pustules after waxing?+
This does not happen to everyone. It can occur the first two to three times due to temporary trauma to the sebaceous gland. We recommend continuing to wax a few more times — it typically subsides. If it does happen to you, we know exactly what to do!
